FAMILY OWNED & OPERATEED

Baker On The Square was established by Richard and Amy Shafer in March, 2022. Richard and Amy are long time residents of Milan, Ohio so when they decided to open their bakery, there was no other place than home…Milan, Ohio on the beautiful Historic Village Square. The building where the bakery is located, 47 Front Street, was built in 1900 and has been home to many businesses over the years. Such businesses include JC Dorr - Groceries & Notions in the early 1900’s and the Milan Post Office until the late 1960’s. When Richard was 5 years old, he received his first bike from the Cycle Shop at this location, and ironically enough, Richard’s father, also named Richard and who was the areas premier photographer, owned and operated an Ice Cream Shop (The Ice Cream Emporium) in this same store front in the 1970’s. The building has a strong family connection so when Richard and Amy purchased the property in 2021, they embarked on a 9 month renovation to restore the building’s integrity with a “Vintage Modern” decor.

Richard has been a life long novice baker, being influenced by his Grandma Shafer and his parents. “Baking is something I’ve always been good at so when we decided to make a life change, a bakery was a natural fit”, says Richard. When they decided to open the bakery, Richard and Amy wanted to bring great quality baked goods with good quality ingredients to the community. Being a from scratch and semi-homemade bakery, Baker On The Square grew quickly in popularity and has become a destination location, bringing in folks from all over north central Ohio.
